Today, I did a lecture about how to predict the next big thing in technology. I mentioned technologies written about by sci-fi authors that is all coming true. An article just showed up on my news feed today about one of those authors and the exact tech that I mentioned, terraforming. In my opinion, Kim Stanley Robinson's book Red Mars is a blue print for the future. One of the reasons is reading great sci-fi with well thought out tech is that they have the room to explore the social or political implications or effects from new technology.
